Benign Mimics of Malignancy in Pulmonary Pathology

چکیده
Introduction There are a variety of predictable circumstances in which benign lung lesions are at risk of being interpreted as malignant neoplastic processes. This brief overview will focus on three of them chosen because of their relative frequency in cases received for consultation. The most common diagnostic challenge is separating hyperplasia and/or metaplasia of non-neoplastic respiratory epithelium from adenocarcinoma, especially on small biopsies. This includes organizing pneumonia which may occasionally mimic either epithelial or non-epithelial neoplasms when it presents as a localized process. Benign lung neoplasms are occasionally confused with malignant lesions; sclerosing hemangioma and multiple carcinoid tumorlets are the chief constituents of this second category of mimics. Finally, benign pleural disease is sometimes difficult to distinguish from either early epithelial mesothelioma or desmoplastic variants of sarcomatous mesothelioma and is a common cause for consultation even among expert reviewers.

Pulmonary Nodular Lymphoid Hyperplasia: A Rare Case Mimicking Malignancy
Pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (PNLH) is a reactive lymphoid proliferation manifesting as multiple solitary nodules or localized infiltrates in the lungs. It is a type of benign lymphoproliferative disease that can affect the lungs. We present the case of a 41-year-old female patient with respiratory symptoms such as productive cough, left chest pain, and dyspnea. Imaging findings revea...

Perineural invasion in tumors is typically indicative of malignancy. There are exceptions in most organ systems, but interpretation is complicated when the tumor in question also mimics malignancy. An example of this challenge is found in the interpretation of sclerosing epithelial tumors of the skin. The differential diagnosis for this category of tumors includes malignant entities such as inf...

Introduction: The most common manifestation of thyroid malignancy is thyroid nodule. In few studies, pathologic findings of malignancy were seen in patients who were undergone thyroidectomy because of causes other than malignancy. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the rate of malignancy in patients who undergone thyroidectomy. Methods: In this retrospective multi central study, ...
متن کاملDiagnostic Accuracy of Frozen Section in Comparison With Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions – A Prospective Study
Background and Objectives: Thyroid gland because of its superficial location is amenable to direct physical examination. Clinical assessment of thyroid lesions by means of physical examination, thyroid scans and ultrasonography is not completely reliable. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective, safe and an initial diagnostic test in the pre-operative evaluation of thy...
متن کاملFlorid Adnexal Polypoid Endometriosis Associated with Very High Serum Ca - 125 Levels Mimicking Ovarian Malignancy
We report a case of florid polypoid endometriosis presenting with advanced bulky disease in pelvis with serum CA – 125 levels of 7844U/ml. The extent of tumor, CT scan findings, elevated serum CA – 125 levels were suggestive of ovarian malignancy. Histopathology demonstrated endometrial glands and stroma. Glands were neither crowded nor complex and were separated by a fibromatous stroma that co...
